We didn’t go to church. I didn’t know anything about Jesus. My father left home when I was eleven. That was a huge wound. I resigned to isolate myself from others, vowing to never let anyone in. Not knowing how else to cope with the pain of life, I began filling myself up with...well, anything. Then, I ran away. In the meantime, God invaded our family, first with my sister.

On a breezy, warm summer day in July of 1986, my sister, Jill, went parachuting for the first and last time. Jumping into the clear, blue sky in anticipation of the thrill of a lifetime, my sister began to spin and twirl through the air. Having been tangled up in the cords of her parachute, unable to reduce her speed, she fell, and then landed. After free falling for over half a mile, you’d think that would be the end. Looking back, that was just the beginning. The field that caught her was the hand of God.
With shattered vertebrae, fractured bones, and a broken spirit, she lay conscious in the middle of a field. Alive, more now than ever, her first words were, "I feel like a bowl of oatmeal". Weeks later, still in a body cast, she met Ken, a man she may not have otherwise met. He led her to Jesus. They are now married and have two daughters. The pins have already been removed from her back. She runs and jumps and plays. When God works, he takes us to the place of surrender. Then he sets us free.

After witnessing my sister’s life transformation you’d think I’d be ready to meet with God. I wasn’t. I continued running. I went away to college to pursue my lifelong dream of…well, I didn’t really have a plan. I just went because that’s what people seemed to do. After making a mess of my education…twice, wrecking relationships…many, and rapidly moving toward a life of self-destruction, God began calling me.
During the middle of my fourth year in college, I hit a wall. There was a huge letdown as my college soccer days were at an end, my grades were in the dumps, nothing was working. I was at my end…well, really at a crossroads, an intersection. God came to interrupt my path. Laying on the floor with the phone in hand, Jill and Ken began to tell me about Jesus. How he’d been at work in my life, and how he wanted to give me the life for which I had been longing. While I had been on God’s mind since the foundation of the world, it was in 1990 that I cried out for God to come into my life. It was then that I began the process of healing, forgiveness, and transformation.

Many of the foundations of my walk with God came through my relationship with Ed, a staff member with The Navigators. For over six years he poured his life into mine, much the way I imagine Jesus doing with his twelve. Meeting with me. Talking with me. Praying with me. Teaching me how to develop a personal relationship with God. From my time with Ed, I have a commitment to real, honest, life-giving relationships. This applies to discipleship, friendship, marriage, as well as having a team environment in ministry.
Kathy and I were married in 1996 and have 4 children. My wife has been God’s grace to me in more ways than I have space to write. It was during the first year of our marriage that I sensed God calling me to formal ministry as a vocation.
Not knowing much about God growing up, my life goal is to simply, "help people walk with God." I seek to do this through one-on-one relationships, as well as living out my passions, gifts, and strengths of leadership, teaching, counseling, and designing.
